Teen recalls best friend's dying words

Friend testifies during accused killer's murder trial

SAN ANTONIO – Her voice often trembling with emotion, Jacqueline Sanchez told a jury how her best friend Amanda Acosta, 17, was shot to death as they rode in the back seat of a car.

She testified that she, Acosta and three friends had just driven from a party in the 200 block of Cavalier Street.

“I heard a shot and Amanda said, ‘I got shot,’ and I told her ‘Stop playing with me,’” Sanchez said.

The teen driving the car in which Acosta and Sanchez were riding drove to the Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital when he realized that Acosta had been shot.

Sanchez said that when they left the party, Julian Martinez, 18, and several friends followed them in another.  The shots, she said, came from that car.

“I kept holding her and I kept screaming at her,” Sanchez said, as she told of the trip to the hospital. “I was slapping her in the face and I told her to wake up for me.”

“I told her to talk to me, but she didn’t,” Sanchez said, as she sobbed on the witness stand.

She said they left the party after a fight broke out between Martinez and another teen.

She said that she heard Martinez alluded to having a gun at the party, but she didn’t see one.

Testimony is expected to continue Wednesday in Felony Impact Court before Judge Laura Parker.

A murder conviction could mean a life prison sentence for Martinez.
