Thieves put shaved ice business in deep freeze

Owners of the Frosty Frog Shaved Ice Co. hoping to recover from huge setback

San Antonio – A San Antonio family's popular shaved ice business has been put in a deep freeze, and not just because it is January. Thieves stole the trailers that house the mobile snack shop.

Owners of The Frosty Frog Shaved Ice Company say their trailers were taken from a Northwest side shopping center over the New Year holiday weekend. Angelique Gonzales said she was hoping 2016 would be the year she expanded her mobile shaved ice business into a retail franchise, instead she's just trying to stay in business.

"It's a huge setback," Gonzales said. "We put everything into that business and it's just very sad someone can take that from us."

The trouble started when a customer asked Gonzales if they moved to a new location because the trailer wasn't at its normal spot Saturday.

Concerned, Gonzales and her husband who were taking a few days off to spend time with their family went to the Bandera Pointe shopping center located at Bandera Road and Loop 1604 and discovered the trailers were gone.
"I was crying and really depressed," Gonzales said. "They took our livelihood. They took everything we worked hard for."

Gonzales started the business seven years ago with her retirement savings, quitting her job to work for the business full time and growing a loyal customer base selling tasty creations.

The trailer with its distinctive orange color and green frog logos was recovered Sunday when one of Gonzales' customers spotted it in their neighborhood but when they got there they realized the damage was already done.
The trailer was ransacked. The overhead air conditioning unit was ripped out and there was no sign of the expensive ice shaver.

"It was in horrible condition, everything's gone," Gonzales said.

The trailer was found parked in front of a home on the West Side but police told Gonzales there's no probable cause to make an arrest. She's now hoping surveillance video showing a white SUV hauling the trailer will change that.

In the meantime, Gonzales is still looking for her second trailer and trying to figure out how to get the business back up and running.

"We'd like the trailers back so we could just start the business again," Gonzales said. "We have to start from scratch and I'm not sure how but we will."

The Gonzales' said they did have insurance on the trailers but the contents, including the expensive ice shaver, were not covered. They are still searching for their stolen storage trailer, it's described as a 2013 medium-sized Flat Rock orange cargo trailer.

If you see the trailer, call San Antonio police.
