It's only mid-July, but it's never too soon to start thinking about Halloween, especially if you run a haunted house.
One local scare factory, the 13th Floor located at 1203 E. Commerce, is already getting it's ghosts and ghouls ready to frighten guests this fall.
"We have this giant creative staff that literally works 12 months out of the year creating this year's haunted house," said Jon Love, a partner who operates the 13th Floor Haunted House.
Now in its fourth year, the 13th floor is looking to crank up the fear a few notches. To do that, they hired world-renowned monster maker Ed Edmunds to create a chilling experience.
It's a giant meat grinder that spits guests out into a horrifying slaughter house three floors below where they are greeted by hungry mutant hogs.
The attraction builds on the 3-story slide that was added to the haunted house last year.
"Last year I would say was the slide's infancy, and this year it's a mature adult and it has some punch," Love said.
Edmunds, who owns a company called Distortions Unlimited, created the death machine in his Colorado studio. Over the past two days, he and his team installed the new feature in the haunted house. On Wednesday, they invited about 100 Facebook fans to experience the new frightening feature.
A Travel Channel film crew documented the process and it will be part of the network's Making Monsters show.
The show follows Edmunds and his team of monster makers as they build sets for haunted houses all over the country.
The piece being filmed in San Antonio will air alongside another feature that follows an installation at a Dallas haunted house.
Edmunds is proud of his latest creation.
"It's got actual physical terror because you're falling through this long chute and it's got the death machine and the pigs that clean up the scraps," Edmunds said. "It's a mess, it's cool."
The guys behind the 13th Floor are looking forward to showing the world how San Antonio scares itself.
"There's an awesome haunted house culture here, for us to be part of that is amazing and for us to share that with the world is even more amazing," Love said.
The 13th Floor opens its doors for another season of screams starting on Sept. 13, which just happens to be on Friday the 13th.
The Making Monster's episode featuring the haunted house will air sometime in October on the Travel Channel.
