BULVERDE, Texas - Comal County is one of the fastest-growing counties in the state and in order to keep up with the growth, the Texas Department of Transportation is looking to the future preparing for that growth with ideas for roadway improvements along Highway 281 and at the intersection of 281 and Highway 46.
"A lot of folks are moving out to this area where there will be new residential and commercial development and so we do need to look forward," said Laura Lopez with TxDOT.
The short range plan takes place around 281 and 46. Later this year TxDOT will be building new turn lanes and raised medians between Bill Brown Elementary school and 281. They will also be adding two new turnarounds and removing two others just north of 46 on 281.
"It's a project that is going to be starting before the end of the year and it's a year project," Lopez said.
The mid-range project is a concept for 281 from country line to county line.
"It is a superstreet concept very similar to what is on 281 in Bexar County and on Loop 1604 on the west side of San Antonio," Lopz said.
She also said the project currently has no funding or start time, they are just preparing for the future.
The third project is a long range project that would be a highway system.
