TxDOT seeks public input in effort to fix 'traffic nightmare' interchange

Interchange involves Loop 410, US 281, and San Pedro Avenue

SAN ANTONIO – “A traffic nightmare.” That's what many drivers are calling the area of Loop 410, U.S. 281 and San Pedro Avenue. Texas Department of Transportation officials are now reaching out to drivers in an effort to fix the interchange.

TxDOT is hosting an open house Thursday night to get vital public input.

Alex Martinez, who is a delivery driver with Groomers Seafood, said he has been driving through the Loop 410, U.S. 281 and San Pedro interchange for the last 20 years.

"You're trying to get to a certain place, a job site or to work, and it's just, it's a cluster,” Martinez said.

Martinez said during peak traffic times, it's almost unbearable.

"It's gotten worse, more accidents," he said. "I saw this truck tail in this poor lady one time."

The Texas Department of Transportation is currently working on a study to improve the area, but it is looking for input from drivers, business owners and neighbors.

Elizabeth Comes, who has been driving through the area for the last eight years, said getting public input is a great idea.

"Not one group of people have the answers,” Comes said. “You need to talk to a lot of people. Some people will see something that I don't see.”

For now, Comes said she will stick to her game plan, which is to avoid the Loop 410, U.S. 281 and San Pedro interchange at the busiest times of the day.

"At certain times of the day, it gets really difficult to get where you want to go," Comes said. "I actually arrange my time at work. Either I'm going to leave early, or I'm going to work late, because I’m not going to leave at 5 o'clock."

The open house started at 5:30 p.m. at the Castle Hills City Hall at 209 Lemonwood Drive. People who attend can get feedback and hear the latest with the study.
