The Texas Department of Transportation will investigate a traffic accident that occurred on Friday at Interstate 10 West near the Boerne Stage Road exit.
Gary Carruth, 41, and his daughter, Sommer, 13, were killed when Carruth’s pickup truck crossed the median and crashed head-on into an 18-wheeler on Friday.
“We investigate all crashes that occur on the highway to see what it is that we can do to make highways safer,” said TxDOT spokesperson Laura Lopez.
She said it is not clear what role a cable barrier in the median did -- or did not -- play in the accident.
Many motorists feel that concrete median barriers are a better choice when it comes to crossover accident prevention.
Robert Cervantez, who runs an automotive repair shop near the highway, said, “Concrete barriers are a lot better (and) a lot safer.”
“The car veered over to the other side of the highway and the cable barriers didn’t prevent it,” said Kay Steidel, who travels I-10 regularly.
Lopez said that though the department will investigate the accident, it is not clear whether this will be a "concrete vs. cable investigation."
