SAN ANTONIO -

A 51-year-old man is accused of stealing his niece's car and then running from authorities.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, George Muniz had been on the run for about a month.

The affidavit stated that a 29-year-old woman told San Antonio police that Muniz, an uncle whom she had not seen in years, was staying with her mother for the holidays.

She said on Jan. 2, Muniz stopped by her job at a restaurant, saying that he needed to retrieve a gift from her car, the affidavit stated.

The woman said she gave her uncle her car keys and told him to leave them with her co-worker when he was finished, the affidavit stated. After her shift ended, the woman realized her car was missing.

The affidavit stated that the woman's boyfriend, who actually owns the vehicle, then reported it stolen.

Deputies in Kendall County later located the car with Muniz inside, under a bridge, but he managed to run away, the affidavit stated.

Muniz was booked into the Bexar County Jail Sunday with bond set at $2,500.
