Universal City man shot to death in front of daughter

Stepfather: 'He was just trying to be the best dad he could be'

A Universal City family is mourning their son.

UNIVERSAL CITY, Texas – Witnesses say 25-year-old Jimmy Wayne Mosmeyer Jr. was shot twice in front of his 2-year-old daughter.

The shooting happened at his apartment in the 400 block of East Aviation Boulevard Thursday evening.

Jimmy's stepfather, Joseph Holt, spoke on behalf of the family on Friday.

"He had minor enemies (but) nothing life-threatening, nothing that's scary," said Holt.

Holt said Mosmeyer just got custody of his daughter and because of that, he was determined to turn his life around.

"He was struggling, but everybody loved him. All of his friends loved him. We all loved him, and he was just trying to be the best dad he could be to that baby," said Holt.

Mosmeyer was in the apartment with his daughter and roommate when the shooter came to the door.

"There was a knock on the door. Jimmy went to go answer the door (and) two shots rang out," said Holt. "The roommate went and hid in the closet. Somebody came in and opened the door to the bedroom, turned the light on, didn't see him. The baby was in her room playing (and) they shut the door and left."

And as his family prepares to celebrate the holidays without their son, they can only hope and pray that peace comes into their lives.

"We would just want some answers," Holt said. "We just don't know why, you know. That's the thing that's killing my wife. There's just no reason."

Police have arrested one man in connection to the shooting death of Mosmeyer, but that person's identity has not been released.

If you have any more information about this shooting, you're asked to call Universal City police.
