Vandals targeted graves with religious statues at a Seguin cemetery over the weekend.
Yolanda Herrera was shocked after seeing her mother’s grave desecrated. The Virgin Mary statue knocked off its base and scratches on the headstone.
“They have no respect, they just trashed it for what reason?” said Herrera at Our Lady of Guadalupe Cemetery.
Her family is just one of half a dozen families whose grave site was vandalized over the weekend.
Seguin police say the damage ranges from statues or headstones being knocked over to being completely smashed into pieces.
“We’re going to step up patrol in the area," Sgt. James Springer said. "You didn’t really think you needed extra patrol in the cemetery.”
The caretaker of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Cemetery said vandalism has happened there before about two years ago.
The Herrera family doesn’t think increase police presence will help them feel better. They said they’ve spent $13,000 on their mother’s head stone, and shelling out more money to repair the damage is devastating.
“It’s hurtful to our family and disrespectful to my mom, hopefully they’ll find it in their heart not to do it again,” said Diane Reyes.
Seguin police do have some leads, but more are always welcome. Anybody with information is asked to call the Seguin Police Department or anonymous tips can be left through Guadalupe County Crime Stoppers at (830) 303-TIPS.
