In a unanimous vote on Thursday, Bexar County commissioners approved adding an additional $10 to the annual vehicle registration fee motorists must pay each year.

“It’s not the ultimate solution, but it is definitely a piece of the solution,” Precinct 4 Commissioner Tommy Adkisson said.

Adkisson criticized state lawmakers for not doing more to address the condition of roads and bridges here.

“The state is supposed to do this, but they struggle and they have gone into overtime starving our road system in this state,” Adkisson said.

He said the legislature should have addressed road repair and expansion through a gas tax or vehicle sales tax.

Adkisson said that feedback from voters, predictably, has been negative.

“I don’t think anybody likes any kind of increases,” he said. “If we could eradicate all taxes, there’s always a constituency that would applaud that.”

The increase will go into effect Jan. 1.
