Stephon Finnell, 22, the man who was shot and killed on the porch of an East Side home Wednesday afternoon, had ties to the victim of another murder earlier this year.
“There was a boyfriend-girlfriend relationship,” San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said Thursday morning.
McManus said Finnell (pictured) witnessed the July 4 murder of his girlfriend, Baby_Girl Harrison, 19, who was pregnant at the time.
Someone fired shots through the unopened door of Harrison’s apartment in the 2300 block of E. Houston Street as she went to answer it.
Both Finnell and the couple’s 3-year-old daughter were inside the apartment at the time.
"There's a belief that he was the intended target when she was killed and yesterday, they caught up with him,” McManus said.
Whoever killed Finnell still isn’t known.
At last check, investigators had not identified any suspects.
Officers found Finnell’s body Wednesday afternoon outside the front door of a home in the 900 block of Canton Street.
Neighbors said he did not live at the residence, and they’re not sure why he was there.
Within a few weeks of Harrison’s murder, police had arrested two suspects — Breanna Ancira, 19, and Devon Donell Fields, 25, each on a capital murder charge.
However, McManus said it appears there were other people who wanted Finnell dead.
He said Finnell had ties to a gang, although it’s possible that may not have played a role in his killing.
"Based on the information that I have, I think it was more personal than it was gang-related,” McManus said.
Because of the gang connection, though, McManus said he has several divisions from his department, such homicide investigators, who are keeping an eye out for any signs of retaliatory violence in the area.
