Friends and classmates of an O'Connor High School student who died in a crash over the weekend gathered Wednesday evening to honor her memory.
More than 100 students gathered on the O'Connor campus to light candles and release balloons for 16-year-old Malery Martinez.
Martinez died Saturday afternoon when an unknown driver forced her mother off Highway 16 and into a tree. The driver fled and remains at-large. Those who knew Martinez say she was full of life and will be greatly missed.
"Every time I saw her she was smiling. There was never really a dull moment. She was always happy. She was a really strong-spirited person," said Jonah Tafoya.
A rosary service for Martinez will be held Friday at 7 p.m. at Sunset Northwest Funeral Home. Her funeral mass will be held Saturday morning at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.
