More than two dozen people attended a vigil and released red balloons in memory of 20-year-old John "Andy" Bermea, a Good Samaritan shot and killed by suspected robbers running through his Northwest Side apartment complex early Thursday morning.

Those who attended the vigil say they chose red balloons because red was his favorite color.

"We're thinking of you and god bless you and you'll be in our hearts forever and he was a wonderful wonderful friend , " said Rosemary Garcia.

Crying on a friend's shoulder and pregnant, Amber, Bermea's girlfriend still can't believe the love of her life is gone.

"She's five months pregnant , now she has no baby's daddy and she just doesn't have any insurance," said Mary Iguchi the grandmother of the Bermea’s girlfriend.

Her grandmother says his death is devastating for both families.

“He had the biggest smile you ever saw, he was getting his life on the right track , getting ready to go to mechanic school, he would have been a good son-in-law, " said Iguchi.

Police arrested three people, including a juvenile in connection with the robbery.

23-year-old Nicholas Pacheco and 23-year-old Mishael Lozano are both charged with capital murder.

Both Pacheco and Lozano have been in jail before. Pacheco for assaulting a family member a number of times and Lozano for possession of marijuana and graffiti.

Pacheco’s bond was set at $1 million. Lozano’s bond was also set at $1 million for the capital murder charge, and $30,000 for a charge of possession of a controlled substance.
