SAN ANTONIO -

Family and classmates of 17-year-old Megan Hernandez will gather for a 6 p.m. vigil on Wednesday at the bus stop where police said she was stabbed to death Tuesday by an ex-boyfriend.

It occurred in the 1100 block of Mission Road across the street from Por Vida Academy, a charter school where the victim was a sophomore.

Eduardo Reyes, 17, remains in the Bexar County Jail under bonds totaling $400,000 on charges of murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and endangering a child.

San Antonio police investigators and witnesses have said the teen mom was holding the couple’s baby as she was being attacked.

Joseph Delgado, Por Vida Academy superintendent, said another student was able to grab the baby, so it was uninjured.

He said the suspect ran off, then was chased by students and the academy's security guard, an off-duty SAPD officer.

Delgado said Reyes was "very quiet, just very matter of fact.

He said Por Vida Academy has organized a fund at the school to benefit baby Alyia, who will turn 1 at the end of the month.

Delgado said while the mother attended classes, she had her child in the school’s on-campus daycare, operated by Blessed Sacrament Child Development.

The superintendent said the baby’s mother was “awesome at school.”

“(She was) just a very kind-hearted person,” he said in describing Hernandez, “She was very happy, very bright, very good in class, very respectful.”

He said she was interested in pursuing a nursing career.

Yet Delgado said domestic violence was to blame for her death.

He said the academy plans to teach students and staff about the issue, “for them to know and understand this cannot be kept a secret. It must be discussed.”
