Warrior and Family Support Center celebrates 10-year anniversary

Fort Sam Houston center offers escape during tough treatment

Officials on Fort Sam Houston gathered with patients and employees Wednesday to celebrate the Warrior and Family Support Center's 10-year anniversary.

The center offers wounded warriors and their families a place to turn to enjoy the comforts of home while they're undergoing intense treatment at Brooke Army Medical Center.

The facility has computer and game rooms, child play areas, continuing education resources, counseling resources, a kitchen, and place to watch TV or movies.

"Life is all about how you handle Plan B. And part of our job is making sure that every man and woman who leaves here has a Plan B," said Judith Markelz, director of WFSC.

She's known around the center as "Mom."

WFSC was created in 2003 and, at that time, located in a 1,000-square-foot space in a hotel on post.

Today, it is a 12,500-square-foot facility inside a donated Hill Country-style home on Fort Sam.

Staff Sgt. Daniel Burgess is one of the many soldiers who've benefitted from the facility over the years.

Burgess underwent an amputation after he stepped on an IED in Afghanistan.

"People you don't even know are just, 'Hey, c'mon, you can do it. Do another lap,'" he said. "You just know you can achieve that mountain top."

"To see a young man or woman come here with a family member and leave here in a year with plans and goals and future- that you can't even fathom," said Markelz. "They're incredibly strong and live with an incredible amount of honor and dignity."

The WFSC employs nine people and operates entirely off of donations.
