A 31-year-old woman was arrested in Travis County after she allegedly attacked her mother in Universal City.
Universal City Police said it was in an attempt to steal money.
According to an arrest affidavit, Tara Elaine Layer broke into her mother's home in the 200 block of Beechwood, possibly through a pet door.
The affidavit stated Layer then attacked her mother, 68-year-old Doris Layer, while she was asleep in bed and struck her in the head, ribs and back with a gun.
The affidavit stated the daughter then held the gun to her mother's head and demanded all the money in her savings account.
"She was in tears. She was bleeding from her nose. Her face had some cuts. She already had some apparent bruising to her arms," said a neighbor, who Doris Layer turned to for help.
The 68-year-old woman was left with a large knot on her head and at least three broken ribs, police stated.
The mother told police she thought her daughter was going to kill her and said she asked where she kept the duct tape. She was able to get away and go across the street for help while Layer went to the garage to get the tape, the affidavit stated.
"She was actually crawling into my house, trying to hit the doorbell. I opened the door, seen who it was, and she came crawling. She didn't want me to look at her, pick her up or anything. She just wanted some help," said the neighbor.
Layer was charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated assault against a family member, injury to the elderly and burglary of a habitation.
The neighbor who helped the mother said it was not the first time the daughter had lashed out, but as far as she knew, it had not been physical before.
"She spray-painted her house. She ruined her home, the daughter. She didn't become abusive, but she didn't want to press charges," she said.
SWAT officers in Travis County served the warrant at a home near Austin.
Layer's 8-month-old baby was with her at the time. Child Protective Services planned to take the child into custody if other family members weren't able to take the baby.
