SAN ANTONIO -

Workers acted quick to put out a fire at a hospital just north of downtown San Antonio early Friday morning.

The fire was reported around 3:30 a.m. at Metropolitan Methodist Hospital in the 1300 block of McCullough Avenue.

Employees said the fire started in a patient's room and smoke began to fill the fourth floor of the hospital.

Employees grabbed a fire extinguisher and put out the fire before San Antonio firefighters arrived on scene, fire officials said.

Workers also scrambled to move 45 to 60 people out of the area affected by smoke.

Fire officials said it appeared the fire started with a plastic item inside the patient's room, but a cause had not been determined as of 5:30 a.m.

The arson unit was also called to the investigate. No injuries were reported, fire officials said.
