Amidst the Y.O. Ranch’s wildebeests and deer is a new resident: a baby giraffe.

"This little one was born on July 8, in the afternoon, and it was a little bit of a surprise,” said Y.O. Ranch’s Director of Tourism Debbie Hagebusch. “We knew the mom was pregnant but we expected the baby in September."

The small giraffe is only two weeks old, but weighed around 250 pounds at birth and is expected to grow to be between 18 to 20 feet tall.

For now, the young giraffe is staying close to his mother, Carlita, as she keeps close watch.

"The mom is very protective and never lets anything get too close to him, so he’s going to grow up to be big and strong,” said Hagebusch.

The giraffes are one many species of wild animal on the ranch, but remain a big draw for tourists.

"I live for these giraffes and just have another little one on the ranch is exciting for the entire ranch,” said Hagebusch.

The Y.O. Ranch needs help naming the baby giraffe and is asking for suggestions.

You can submit your suggestion by going to the ranch’s Facebook page.
