SAN ANTONIO -- San Antonio police are taking their search for the city's worst offenders online.
The department unveiled its most wanted list Wednesday, and said they plan to use the Internet to get tips from the public so they can keep potentially dangerous people off the streets.
"We're going to provide a direct Web site link to the top 10 list of our most wanted suspects to the public," said SAPD Chief Bill McManus.
The department unveiled the names and faces of suspects wanted for dangerous drugs, aggravated assault, aggravated robbery, burglary, sex offenses against a child, and even murder.
"The top 10 list is going to be updated weekly and we encourage the public to become partners with us and help us track down these criminals," McManus said.
The person listed in the top spot is 31-year-old Jose Armando Mejia, a suspect in a homicide. Police say that in 2002, Mejia shot and killed a man, while injuring a woman and 6-year-old child.
McManus said criminologists who've studied offenders and crime trends report 5 percent of the offenders commit about 40 percent of the serious crimes.
"Our goal is to place emphasis on this 5 percent habitual offenders and engage the community with this effort," McManus said.
More than 1,800 police officers along with the general public will have access to the names and faces of the most wanted each week.
