Dozens of cats, dogs at ACS in danger of being euthanized

ACS says 600+ animals brought in this week

SAN ANTONIO – Dozens of animals in the care of Animal Care Services are in danger of being euthanized.

The shelter says it's at capacity after taking in more than 600 animals this week, including dozens of puppies and kittens.

"We desperately need the help of the citizens of San Antonio to come and help us and just foster them for a couple of weeks," said ACS Rescue Supervisor Jerry Leah Cross.

The shelter says puppies and kittens are one their biggest priorities, with them it's less about space but more about care.

"Regardless of us having this space we don't have 24-hour staff. We don't have care overnight to feed these guys and when they are this size they can’t feed themselves," Cross said.

Cross said the shelter hasn't euthanized a healthy puppy in 2 years. She's hopeful they won't have to start now but need the community to step up and provide foster care.

"We provide food, we provide bottles, and formula and crates and blankets," said Cross.

Cross also has a message for current pet owners.

"Spray and neuter your pets. We have all these puppies because there are so many strays that are not spayed and neutered," Cross said.

ACS will be open on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Anyone looking to foster or adopt is welcome.
