Two Teenagers Launch Campaign For City Council

POSTED: Monday, February 2, 2009
UPDATED: 6:10 pm CST February 2, 2009

Since President Barack Obama has taken office, he has inspired a younger generation to get involved in politics.

It's a feeling that's taking hold here in San Antonio. Robert Garibay, 18, and Koi Smith, 19, are both college students at Northwest Vista College. They are also city council candidates.

Garibay is running in District 7 and Smith in District 6.

"There are so many emotions going on at one time, confusion, excitement. I'm just ready to get in there," said Smith.

Both candidates said they are already detailing their platforms through both technology and the old-fashioned way: face-to-face. Garibay is running against incumbent Justin Rodriguez, while Smith running for the soon-to-be-vacated seat in District 6.

Candidates can officially file applications to run for city council on Monday, Feb. 9.
