District 7 Race Has Familiar Foes

Elena Guajardo, Robert Garibay Challenging Incumbent Justin Rodriguez

For the second time in as many years, two of the candidates in District 7 are familiar foes, but the difference this time around is incumbency.

Councilman Justin Rodriguez is on the flip side of the ballot and facing a challenge from former City Councilwoman Elena Guajardo, who lost her re-election campaign two years ago to Rodriguez, but he said the attacks have remained the same since last election.

He said his platform this time has changed from what he wants to do to what he has done.

"All of those things that really matter is terms of quality of life and making our city better," he said. "We have a track record of making progress and we'd like to continue making that progress."

Guajardo, defeated by about 2,800 votes last election, said she hadn't planned on running again, but was compelled by people in her district to change the area's leadership.

"I'd be in the grocery store, and people would come up to me and say, 'How did you get things done, because it's not happening,'" she said. "We're not getting the follow-through."

A third candidate said his campaign should be taken seriously, despite the initial appearance people have of him considering his age. Robert Garibay, 18, said he's spent months shaking those beliefs.

"When they hear me speak and talk about the issues, and we talk about public safety, we talk about infrastructure, when we talk about moving San Antonio forward, then people are like, 'Wait a minute,'" he said. "All of a sudden he's serious."

Garibay graduated from Business Careers High School last year. Election Day is scheduled for May 9. A sample ballot and polling locations can be found on the Bexar County Elections Web site. More than 49,000 people cast early ballots for this election, according to the Bexar County Elections Department.

Editor's Note: A previous version of this story incorrectly identified Garibay's alma mater. He graduated from Business Careers High School last year. KSAT.com apologizes for the error.
