ROCKSPRINGS, Texas -- Small-town politics has the mayor's office and City Council at odds in Rocksprings, Texas, and it may begin affecting city business.
Recently-elected Mayor Lawanda Goller said she told city employees not to show up for work after the City Council removed her authority to issue paychecks at Monday evening's City Council meeting. Rocksprings is located about 120 to the northwest of San Antonio.
"I don't see any use in them working for nothing," Goller said.
Since being elected, she said, certain members of the council, including Mayor Pro Tem Tamara Scotch, have been trying to remove Goller's duties as mayor, including limiting the time she can be at City Hall. Attempts to reach both Scotch and City Councilman Julio Rodriguez for comment were unsuccessful.
"I think we need some help, and someone's going to have to step in and do it," said resident Penny Coffman.
Goller said despite some of the council's attempts at limiting her power, those efforts won't hinder her from fighting to represent the community that elected her to office.
