Van De Putte: I Could Win Governor Race
State Senator Says She Chose Family Over Governor's Office
POSTED: Sunday, July 5, 2009
SAN ANTONIO -- She made the decision not to run for Governor, but that doesn’t mean she didn’t think she could win.
Texas State Sen. Leticia Van de Putte said the polling they conducted “looked good,” but she and her family prayed about it and Van de Putte told KSAT’s Steve Spriester “I don’t have any regrets.”
She also said she thinks the timing for a Democratic candidate for governor could be right, it’s just not the right time for her. She said when it comes to current Gov. Rick Perry, “I think there’s definitely Texas Fatigue.”
Sitting in her West San Antonio home, her grandson in a nearby playpen, Leticia Van de Putte looks very much like a doting grandmother. Changing diapers is her choice over attending campaign dinners. After 18 years in the legislature she contends she will instead turn her attention to state issues like children’s health insurance, strengthening San Antonio’s Health Science Center and UTSA, and redistricting in 2011.
Nationally, Van de Putte, as a pharmacist, will be giving input on health care reform. 2008 was a year Van de Putte spent a lot of time in the national spotlight as Co-Chair of the Democratic National Convention, and in giving the Democratic Spanish language response to President Bush’s last State of the Union, but instead of a run for governor, she said she is throwing her support behind former Austin mayor and State Rep. Kirk Watson.
