Protecting your pets from tricks and treats this Halloween

SAN ANTONIO – After a night of trick-or-treating this Halloween, you might have candy and other goodies around the house.

While this is nice for your sweet tooth, the doctors at Texas Veterinary Hospitals say it can be bad news for pets.

Dr. Michael Mixon, a veterinarian at Texas Veterinary Hospitals, explained that dogs will eat almost anything, from candy wrappers to entire chocolate bars.

He says that if your dog or cat’s personality suddenly changes, your pet may have eaten something that is making it sick.

“When they’re off, you know something’s wrong, especially when you see the wrappers on the floor,” Dr. Mixon said.

Dr. Mixon says vomiting and diarrhea are other common signs that your pet has eaten something it shouldn’t have.

He says that if you suspect your pet is sick, take him or her to a vet as soon as possible.
