SA Missions protectors announce new name, look

Nonprofit once known as Los Compadres now called Mission Heritage Partners

SAN ANTONIO – An organization that protects and preserves the historic San Antonio Missions on Monday announced a new name and a new look.

The nonprofit Los Compadres, is now called Mission Heritage Partners, officials said at a news conference Monday at Mission San Jose.

Founded in 1983, the group provides financial and volunteer support for the preservation and restoration of the four missions, related farm and ranchlands and historic irrigation systems and their development into America's premier Spanish Colonial National Park.

"One of the important things that we underwrite for the park is their volunteer docent program, because they simply don't have the full-time staff to do everything that needs to be done," Mission Heritage Partners acting executive director Rosebud Coffey said.

The name coincides with the missions being named a Unesco World Heritage Site.

The announcement is also made as San Antonio prepares to celebrate its 300th birthday, or tricentennial, in 2018.
