Tricentennial celebration to commemorate San Antonio's 300th birthday

KSAT an official media sponsor of the celebration

SAN ANTONIO – Few cities in the nation can lay claim to such a long and storied history. But that’s not the case in San Antonio, where the town known for the Alamo and its famous River Walk is about to turn 300 years old.

The city is about to throw the party of the century, and the entire community is invited to take part.

“We are thrilled that San Antonio’s diverse and unique arts and culture scene will be showcased at the forefront of our Tricentennial year!” said Tricentennial Commission Chief Operating Officer Asia Ciaravino.

As the most-trusted news source in San Antonio, KSAT will bring the Tricentennial celebration directly to people as the official media sponsor. Over the course of a year and a half, the talents of the community will be showcased on air, online and through the station’s multiple social media platforms.

KSAT 12 Vice President and General Manager Phil Lane said the list of events is comprehensive and will give San Antonians a true look at the history and culture of San Antonio’s very beginnings.

“We at KSAT 12 are excited and honored to be the media partner for San Antonio’s Tricentennial celebration,” Lane said. “We have plans for all of 2018 and our work will begin this year as we highlight all of the arts and cultural events, community service projects and spectacular fireworks shows that will highlight the festivities. We will bring the Tricentennial celebration live into the homes of everyone in South Texas.”

Among the list of many stories KSAT will tell is that of how San Antonio came to be.

“San Antonio has a rich cultural past, and (we went) to Spain to see where the original settlers came from. We’ll also challenge local residents to get involved by taking the ‘SA Live 300 Challenge,’ and by taking part in the ‘300 days of Community Service,’” Lane said. “This is not a party for only a few to celebrate, this is for the entire South Texas community to come together to honor the heritage that brought us to the great prosperity we enjoy today.”

In fact, Lane pointed to KSAT’s own call letters as a way to symbolically say this is about each and every person who calls the city home and those who have any number of connections to San Antonio.

“KSAT 12’s call letters actually stand for San Antonio (SAT) and we feel our people are best suited to shine the spotlight on such an important historical milestone,” Lane said. “We’ve been honored to bring San Antonio’s Fiesta celebrations to life for the past three years, and we’ll give this celebration the same KSAT quality experience we have delivered for Fiesta.”

“Our staff at KSAT 12 has been energized by this project from the beginning and I have no doubt that we will make San Antonio proud as we celebrate this grand event,” Lane said.

As events happen, the Tricentennial Commission and KSAT will announce them and encourage communitywide participation.
