NHL Today: Coach Gretzky Still Winless

POSTED: Friday, October 7, 2005

Kings 3, Coyotes 2
LOS ANGELES -- Alexander Frolov and Pavol Demitra each had a goal and an assist for the Los Angeles Kings, who continued their dominance at home over the Phoenix Coyotes with a 3-2 win at the Staples Center. Goaltender Jason LaBarbera stopped 27 of 29 shots for the Kings, who have not lost at home versus the Kings since October 15, 2000. Andy Murray became the winningest head coach in franchise history, passing Bob Pulford on the all-time list with his 179th victory. Wayne Gretzky, meanwhile, has yet to pick up his first 'W' as a head coach, dropping both contests thus far at the helm for Phoenix. Luc Robitaille also scored for the Kings, who rebounded from a Wednesday loss to Dallas, in which they blew a 4-0 lead and were beaten 5-4. Krystofer Kolanos and Oleg Saprykin had a goal each for the Coyotes, and goaltender David Leneveu made 25 stops.

Canadiens 4, Rangers 3
NEW YORK -- Michael Ryder scored his second game-winning goal in as many nights, this one 2:10 into overtime, as the Montreal Canadiens defeated the New York Rangers, 4-3, at Madison Square Garden. Ryder, who scored the game-winning goal with 11.1 seconds left in Montreal's 2-1 season-opening win over Boston on Wednesday, tallied two goals and Jose Theodore stopped 16 shots for Montreal. Christopher Higgins and Alexander Perezhogin both notched their first NHL career goals for the Canadiens. Kevin Weekes allowed four goals on 28 shots and Marcel Hossa, Martin Rucinsky and Dominic Moore each scored goals for the Rangers.

Red Wings 4, Blues 3
ST. LOUIS -- Manny Legace stopped 23 shots and four different Red Wings scored goals, as Detroit defeated St. Louis, 4-3, at the Savvis Center in the second game of a home-and-home series. Robert Lang, Mikael Samuelsson, Jiri Fischer and Brendan Shanahan each tallied a goal and Jason Williams recorded three assists for the Red Wings, who defeated the Blues for the second time in two nights. Detroit won 5-1 Wednesday in the season-opener for both teams. Andy Roach scored his first career NHL goal, Doug Weight notched his first goal of the season and Patrick Lalime stopped 23 of 27 shots he faced for the Blues.
