SA On List Of Relocation Cities For Florida Marlins

The president of the Florida Marlins met with local leaders Tuesday about possibly relocating the team to San Antonio.

Marlins President David Samson, Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff and other local leaders toured three potential sites for a new baseball stadium.

The entourage looked at some land near the SBC Center, near Retama Park and the Longhorn Quarry area near Interstate 35 and Wurzbach Parkway.

"We've had a franchise for 13 years and two world championships, three owners and no stadiums and declining attendance. So, I guess I don't know how they're (Miami officials) going to respond, but I would say actions speak louder than words," Samson said at a news conference.

The Miami-based team, which won the World Series in 2003, is looking for a new home after efforts to have a new stadium built in South Florida failed.

Wolff said that a new stadium could be built with an existing motel-hotel tax, which is already paying for the SBC Center.

"We would do it without a tax increase," Wolff said. "We're using the hotel-motel tax to pay for the arena (SBC center), and we're moving along much quicker than we envisioned and how quickly we're paying that off."

Las Vegas, Portland and Charlotte are among other cities the Marlins are interested in moving.

Samson said team officials would like to make a decision about whether to move in the next three to five months.
