The Mavericks had been outshot from the free-throw line by 249 going into Friday’s game. That’s more than five extra free throws per game that the opponent is getting and the Mavericks aren’t. “It’s been a major emphasis for us really since the middle of the year to defend without fouling,” Carlisle said. “As a team, we have some nights when we get to the line a lot. But we’re not in the top half in terms of free throws attempted. So we got to decrease the number of times the opponent gets to the line. “Otherwise, the free-throw battle every night is a pivotal aspect of the game.”
