COMMERCE, Texas (AP) — Texas A&M-Commerce coach Guy Morriss has resigned after the Lions finished the season 1-9.

The school on Monday announced the resignation. West Texas A&M on Saturday beat A&M-Commerce 45-14.

Morriss was hired by the Division II school in January 2009 after coaching at Baylor and Kentucky.

Morriss in March 2010 apologized for praising his players for removing campus newspapers from their racks because of a negative story about the program.

Morriss will remain at A&M-Commerce as a special assistant to the athletic director for fundraising and special projects. The school will immediately begin the search for a new football coach.
