R.A. Dickey, the 2012 National League Cy Young Award winner, yielded four runs in the first three innings as the United States lost its opening game of the World Baseball Classic 5-2 to Mexico Friday night in Phoenix.

Adrian Gonzalez hit a two-run homers off Dickey and drove in three runs for Mexico, which had lost to Italy in its first game of Pool D play.

Dickey yielded six hits and four earned runs in his four innings of work.

The Americans collected eight hits and scored single runs in the fourth and eighth. But Sergio Romo pitched a hitless ninth inning to get the save for Mexico.

A sizable portion of the Chase Field crowd of 44.256 was rooting for Mexico.
