Tiger Woods was five shots off the pace after shooting a 4-under-par 68 in the first round of the Pebble Beach National Pro-Am on Thursday at Pebble Beach, Calif.
Playing in his first event of the year, Woods carded six birdies at Spyglass Hill, considered the most difficult of the tournament's three courses.
“This is the harder of the three (courses)," Woods said. "Hopefully next two days I can get it going.”
Dustin Johnson had a pair of eagles in the first six holes en route to a 9-under 63 at Pebble Beach that left him in a three-way tie atop the leaderboard with Danny Lee and Charlie Wi.
Lee also had two eagles in his bogey-free round at Pebble Beach while Wi shot a 61 on the par-70 Monterey Peninsula layout.
Ken Duke shot a blistering 28 on the back nine at Pebble Beach en route to a 64 that left him tied with Brian Harman (64) at 8-under.
Nick Watney (66) headed a four-player contingent at 6-under with the day's best round at Spyglass Hill. Hunter Mahan was among a group of five players at 5-under.
In addition to Watney and Kevin Na (66), Bob Estes (67) was the only other player with a lower score than Woods at Spyglass Hills.
Woods has not won tournament featuring a full field since the Australian Masters in November 2009. He won the Chevron World Challenge in December against an 18-player field.
