Becky Hammon to receive historic honor

Former Stars player will be honored June 25

SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Stars announced that they will retire former Stars guard Becky Hammon’s No. 25 jersey.

The ceremony will be held before the Stars play the Atlanta Dream on Saturday, June 25, and the first 2,525 fans will receive a commemorative Becky Hammon T-shirt.

Hammon was undrafted during her rookie season but later signed and joined the New York Liberty, where she played seven seasons with the team until she was later traded to the San Antonio Stars during the 2007 WNBA draft.  

While in San Antonio, Hammon became the seventh player in WNBA history to score 5,000 points, was named one of the WNBA’s Top 15 Players of All Time and earned the nickname “Big Shot Becky” because her ability to score in clutch moments.  

She remains the Stars' all-time leader in assists, three-point field goals made and points per game.

Hammon played her last eight seasons with the Stars before retiring in 2014.

She then joined Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich’s coaching staff as an assistant coach, becoming the first full-time, salaried female coach in NBA history.
