Spurs fans revel in sweep over LA Lakers
Fans say sweep brings back memories of 1999
More than a hundred San Antonio Spurs fans packed Big Sam's Grill & Bar Sunday to watch the team complete a four game playoff sweep of the Los Angeles Lakers.
"We love our Spurs," yelled Adele Vazquez, one of dozens of Baseline Bums watching the game.
The group screamed "Go Spurs Go" in unison as the Spurs routed the Lakers 103 - 82 to advance to the second round of the 2013 NBA Playoffs.
It will be a few more days before the Spurs find out if they'll be facing the Golden State Warriors or Denver Nuggets in round two, but fans just wanted to enjoy getting out of the first round.
"A 'W' is a 'W,'" said Baseline Bum Jan Livingston. "I'm in full Coach Popovich mode. One game at a time, and let's just play our best."
The Lakers were riddled with injuries and missing several starters, including Kobe Bryant. But Spurs fans had little sympathy for their opponent's star player.
"He's sitting over there crying," said Vasquez. "Too bad, so sad."
The last time the Spurs swept the Lakers in the playoffs was in 1999, en route to the franchise's first NBA championship.
Baseline Bum Lee Roqueford said that was not the only reason to believe lady luck might be wearing silver and black this year.
"I'd like to point out that it's an odd numbered year," said Roqueford. "We've won all of our championships in odd numbered years."
