Although his Half of Fame career ended in a Denver Broncos uniform, with whom he won his only Super Bowl in 2016, the Cowboys offered Ware a one-day honorary contract ahead of the team’s predraft news conference, allowing him to finish his career where it began 12 years ago.

The Dallas Cowboys drafted Ware with the 11th overall pick in 2005 out of Troy University.

Ware had an instant impact on Bill Parcels’ transition from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4 scheme, propelling him to be the Cowboys’ all-time leader in sacks and forced fumbles. He also made seven Pro Bowls in his nine years with Dallas.

During the Monday news conference, Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said he couldn’t think of a more “perfect player in pro football” and that he didn’t lose “one second of thought or sleep” when Ware was with the Cowboys.

Head coach Jason Garrett was also present at the news conference and shared Jones’ estimation of Ware’s rareness as a “once-in-a-generation type player.”

Garrett said the Cowboys are looking to draft a prospect with his sort of stature in the future.
