Manziel's agent drops troubled QB as his father voices concerns

Paul Manziel says son won't live to 24 if he doesn't get help

CLEVELAND – Cleveland Browns owner Jimmy Haslam says he hasn't been able to reach troubled quarterback Johnny Manziel.

Haslam told reporters Friday in San Francisco ahead of the Super Bowl that the 2012 Heisman Trophy winner hasn't responded to multiple attempts to reach him.

Haslam said, "We'll do anything we can to help him personally and our thoughts and prayers are with Johnny and his family."

Dallas police said Friday they have opened a criminal investigation into a reported assault by Manziel on his ex-girlfriend. She got an order of protection against him.

Manziel's agent also dropped the quarterback following two police investigations in Texas last weekend.

Erik Burkhardt released a statement to media outlets Friday saying "with deep regret" he has ended the business relationship. Manziel will be released by the Cleveland Browns next month.

Burkhardt says he will remain supportive of the 23-year-old player. The agent adds that he and Manziel's family have gone to great lengths to outline steps to help him.

NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport tweeted the full statement from Burkhardt.

Manziel was under police investigation for allegedly hitting ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley. She told police the Heisman Trophy winner struck her "several times" at a Dallas hotel and later when they drove back to her apartment in Fort Worth. The police departments in both cities said Thursday their investigations are closed.

Burkhardt isn't the first to end business ties with Manziel. Cavaliers star LeBron James' marketing agency ended its association with him last month.

Family concerned about Manziel's future

Manziel's father, Paul Manziel, told The Dallas Morning News that he is afraid his son won't live to see his 24th birthday after refusing to go to rehab twice in the last week.

"I truly believe if they can't get him help, he won't live to see his 24th birthday," Paul Manziel told The Dallas Morning News.

The family tried to get Johnny Manziel to go to a rehab facility on Saturday, the day after the alleged altercation with Crowley, according to The Dallas Morning News.

Fellow NFL player Tyrann Mathieu tweeted a message to Johnny Manziel Friday morning, offering his help to the former Texas A&M quaterback.

"Johnny should hit me up.. It ain't easy but it's worth it bra!" Mathieu's tweet read.

Mathieu had his share of off-the-field issues before settling in as a reliable impact player on the Arizona Cardinals defense.

The Browns released a statement Tuesday saying they were troubled by Johnny Manziel's "continual involvement in incidents."

The team is not expected to bring him back for next season.
