Father of former Spurs player killed in drive-by shooting

The father of a former San Antonio Spurs player was fatally shot in the Los Angeles area Wednesday night, TMZ Sports reported.

According to the website, Richard Jefferson Sr., 65, the father of Richard Jefferson, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Compton.

The elder Jefferson was reportedly shot multiple times while he was standing in front of a liquor store in a residential area.

He was transported to the hospital and later pronounced dead.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is investigating the shooting and has not announced if Jefferson Sr. was the target.

His son, Richard Jefferson, was born in Los Angeles and raised in Phoenix by his mother and a stepfather.

He played for the Spurs from 2009 to 2012 and was traded by the team to Golden State in the middle of the 2012-13 season.
