Texas teachers, child care staff are now eligible for COVID-19 vaccine
SAN ANTONIO โ Texas teachers, along with school and child care staff, are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine, the Texas Department of State Health Services announced Wednesday. โThe federal directive defined eligibility as โthose who work in pre-primary, primary, and secondary schools, as well as Head Start and Early Head Start programs (including teachers, staff, and bus drivers) and those who work as or for licensed child care providers, including center-based and family care providers,โ according to the news release. Those groups included frontline health care workers, people 65 and older and people 16 and older with underlying health conditions. AdโThis action does not change the other groups prioritized for vaccination in Texas,โ state health department officials wrote in the news release. Texas to get more vaccine doses than expected this week
The Houston Health Department has said that this week it will focus its vaccine allocation on people at the highest risk for severe illness and those in vulnerable communities. The state has received nearly 2.9 million doses of the coronavirus vaccine, according to the COVID Tracking Project. Texas providers have administered nearly 2.3 million doses of vaccine, according to the state health department. On Sunday, Texas health officials reported 11,155 new and probable coronavirus cases and 171 more deaths due to the illness caused by the virus. There have been nearly 2.1 million virus cases and 36,491 deaths as a result of COVID-19 since the pandemic began, according to the Texas health department.
These San Antonio hubs will be receiving COVID-19 vaccine shipments this week

Metro Health, WellMed to reopen COVID-19 vaccination registration, receive 9,000 more doses each
SAN ANTONIO โ The San Antonio Metropolitan Health District and WellMed have each received 9,000 more doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Metro Health, which received a shipment of the Pfizer vaccine, will begin booking appointments Friday for the Alamodome next week. To avoid the overwhelming rush of residents seeking appointments that occurred with the first series of Alamodome appointments, the City of San Antonio will make appointments available on a rolling basis. The registration system will continue to reopen as appointments become available due to cancellations. WellMed received 9,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine for distribution next week.

More people in Texas are hospitalized for COVID-19 than at any other time during the pandemic

This hospital data does not account for people who are hospitalized but have not gotten a positive test, and DSHS says some hospitals may be missing from the daily counts. As of Monday, the state is also reporting 49 deaths from COVID-19, a lagging indicator of the extent of transmission rates, and more than 12,800 new confirmed COVID-19 cases. Across the state, COVID-19 patients occupy 17.8% of the state's hospital beds, and only 745 staffed ICU beds are still available.
Texas reports more than 15,000 new daily COVID-19 cases
DALLAS โ Texas on Tuesday reported more than 15,000 newly confirmed daily cases of the coronavirus amid spikes in cases and hospitalization as winter approaches. The Texas Department of State Health Services also said 9,028 people were hospitalized across the state. Last week marked the first time Texas surpassed a daily count of 9,000 hospitalizations since a deadly summer outbreak. During the summer outbreak, the state saw the numbers of new daily cases go just past 10,000 for the first time. Since late November, the new daily cases have soared past 10,000 on several days, with 15,103 new cases reported Tuesday, according to state health officials.
Gov. Abbott says Texas is ready to distribute COVID-19 vaccine, but when will it be available?
Greg Abbott said he expected the first shipment of Pfizerโs touted COVID-19 vaccine to come by the end of November, but that doesnโt mean the public will have to access to it before the end of the year. In a tweet, Abbott said Texas stands ready to distribute the vaccine โimmediately,โ along with two experimental antibody treatments that have recently received emergency approval from the Food and Drug Administration. But more work must be done before the vaccine is ready to go. Part of Texas' COVID-19 vaccination plans includes performing checks to make sure providers can store the vaccines at those temperatures before receiving the vaccine. Lastly, when the vaccine is ready for distribution, it will go to the people who are most vulnerable first.
Reported coronavirus cases in Texas surpasses 900,000
AUSTIN, Texas โ The number of coronavirus cases reported by the Texas health department surpassed 900,000 on Saturday and more than 18,000 people in the state have now died due to COVID-19, the illness caused by the virus, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. There were a reported 6,845 new cases and 90 additional deaths to bring the totals to 900,596 cases and 18,024 who have died since the pandemic began in March. The true number of cases in Texas is likely higher though because many people havenโt been tested, and studies suggest people can be infected and not feel sick. The health department reported 102,769 active cases of the virus, that 782,006 people have recovered while the number of hospitalizations increased by 69 to 5,696. For some, especially older adults and people with existing health problems, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia and death.
Texas sends more medical forces to virus hot spot in El Paso
AUSTIN, Texas โ Texas is sending more medical reinforcements to the El Paso area in response to the regionโs surge of coronavirus cases and the illness the virus causes, Gov. The Texas Department of State Health Services and the Texas Division of Emergency Management will send more medical personnel and equipment this week to address the surge of COVID-19 cases. The health department will send more than 460 medical personnel to the region. The agencies will also send a Texas Emergency Medical Task Force ambulance bus, medical incident support team, five ambulances and mobile medical unit to assist first responders. Active COVID-19 cases there soared by 864 cases Thursday to 9,569.
Texas to provide almost 3 million flu vaccines for residents
Governor Greg Abbott announced Thursday that the Texas Department of State Health Services will provide 2.8 million doses of the flu vaccine for the Texas Vaccines for Children Program and the new Adult Influenza Vaccine Initiative, according to a press release. โThe flu vaccine is an effective way to prevent the spread of influenza, and expanding access to this vaccine is especially important this year so that our health care systems can focus on treating COVID-19 patients,โ said Abbott. โThe Texas Vaccines For Children Program and the Adult Influenza Vaccine Initiative will provide these effective, voluntary vaccines to Texans across the state and help us protect the health and safety of our communities. Texas updates coronavirus case totals in schools, but the data remains limited and murky

The Texas Department of State Health Services has posted new data on COVID-19 cases in schools, one week after it had to retract its first attempt at providing district-by-district breakdowns of reported infections. The state health agency and Texas Education Agency plan to release weekly compilations of case numbers statewide and at the district level as reported to them by school districts. The 333 school districts with hidden case numbers reported more COVID-19 cases than students enrolled in person, which is almost certainly inaccurate. Newly reported Texas coronavirus cases jump
AUSTIN, Texas โ The number of newly reported cases of the coronavirus in Texas took a jump Wednesday as state health officials reported 5,335 new cases, 40% more than the 3,812 cases reported Tuesday. That raised the total Texas caseload since the state began coronavirus tracking in March to 748,767. Of those, 69,767 cases were active and 3,344 were hospitalized Wednesday, the Texas Department of State Health Services reported. The state also reported 107 new deaths from COVID-19, the illness caused by the virus. That's a 51% increase from the 71 deaths reported Tuesday.

Texas retail ban on smokeable hemp starts Sunday
With those rules that take effect Sunday comes a retail ban on smokeable hemp. So the state asked the public for comment on why it should keep smokeable hemp products on shelves. "There were just under 1,700 commenters, however, who strongly disagreed with (a retail hemp ban) being included in the rules," Finkel said. Gov. Abbott announces distribution of Remdesivir to 12 San Antonio area hospitals

Texas wont specify where hospital beds are available as coronavirus cases hit record highs

But the state isnt releasing the information it collects about how many beds individual hospitals have available. According to data from DSHS, the state had 1,322 available intensive care unit beds and close to 13,000 available hospital beds Wednesday. Some of the regional advisory councils provide county-level breakdowns of available hospital beds within their boundaries, including the Southeast Texas Regional Advisory Council, which includes Houston. Many local government and health authorities have opted not to make hospital capacity information public.
Texas A&M scientists call for COVID-19 investigation
COLLEGE STATION, TX Two scientists at Texas A&M University have called for a bipartisan inquiry into the countrys handling of the initial COVID-19 outbreak response. As of June 23, Texas Department of State Health Services has reported 114,881 total cases as the U.S. death toll surpasses 120,000 people. Particularly concerning, Hoetz said, in the countrys response was that transmission was allowed to go on for weeks without a major public health response. What hurt Wuhan was what hurt New York City, which is the virus transmission went on for six weeks before there was any public health intervention, Hotez said in a statement. Hoetz said, in an interview with Texas A&M System Chancellor John Sharp, that he is worried that anti-science-nationalism is creating global instability.
Texas coronavirus hospitalizations hit record highs for a full week
Thursday marked the seventh consecutive day that Texas reported a record number of hospitalized coronavirus patients, with 2,947 people currently in hospitals being treated for COVID-19, according to data released Thursday by the Texas Department of State Health Services. The latest seven-day average for the number of people hospitalized is 2,468. There's almost twice as many people hospitalized because of the coronavirus than there was on Memorial Day. The new coronavirus has killed more than 2,000 people in Texas. On Wednesday the state reported 3,129 new cases.
First COVID-19 death reported in Guadalupe County, officials say
GUADALUPE COUNTY, Texas One resident has died from COVID-19 in the city of New Braunfels, marking the first COVID-19 related death in Guadalupe County, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. So far, 178 residents have recovered from coronavirus in Guadalupe County and there are 46 active cases. Health officials said 17 more COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in the county since Wednesday, June 18, which brings the case total to 225. Restaurants get ready to expand capacity to 75% under governors orders
SAN ANTONIO Restaurants can expand their occupancy level to 75% starting Friday, but some local restaurant owners said its impossible to expand occupancy due to social distancing guidelines. According to the Texas Department of State Health Services, restaurants can operate at 75% capacity for dine-in service. Its very frustrating because the 75% really isnt going to make a difference for us. According to a city of Fredericksburg press release, information reported by Gillespie County on the original two COVID-19 cases came directly from the Texas Department of State Health Services, which was notified by two independent labs that lab errors resulted in two false-positive reports of the virus. Frio County investigating possible case of COVID-19, officials say
FRIO COUNTY โ The Texas Department of State Health Services is investigating a possible case of COVID-19 in Frio County, according to health officials. The Frio County Sheriffโs Office posted the announcement on Facebook Sunday night. The individual that is exhibiting symptoms is currently hospitalized in Bexar County and the investigation is ongoing, according to health officials. The heath department and Frio County officials are working to trace anyone else that may have been in contact with the possible COVID-19 patient. People who visited cattle barn at SA rodeo might need to be checked for rabies
The Texas Department of State Health Services is notifying people who visited the cattle barn at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo from Feb. 11-14 that they may need to be assessed for a possible rabies exposure. A cow in the cattle barn developed rabies and was capable of spreading the virus that causes it during those dates. Itโs time to wrap-up the rodeo, San Antonio!
