2 children involved in wreck with 18-wheeler

SAN ANTONIO – San Antonio police said a wrong-way driver caused a violent head-on collision early Saturday morning on the city’s East Side.

It happened on Interstate 35 near Walters Street around 2:30 a.m.

According to police, the wrong-way driver was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-35 when he slammed head-on into a car with a woman, child and infant inside. The impact of the collision caused that car to spiral out of control and crash into a semi-truck.

The debris from the vehicle hit the fuel tank of the 18-wheeler so hard it ruptured, police said.

Police said the wrong-way driver lost one of his tires, but managed to drive to a warehouse on three wheels.

He was caught by authorities a short time later and is now facing charges of DWI, failing to stop and render aid and intoxication assault.

There is no word on the conditions of the passengers at this time.
