4 dead, I-35 North closed briefly following wrong-way crash in Kyle

Incident occurred just before 2 a.m. near mile maker 215

KYLE, Texas – Authorities said 4 people are dead Friday morning following a wrong-way crash on Interstate 35 North in Kyle, Texas, located between San Antonio and Austin.

Officials said the incident occurred at the Kyle Parkway exit just before 2 a.m. near the mile marker 215.

Kyle Police Chief Jeff Barnett told KXAN in Austin that two men, a woman, and an 18-month old child died in the crash. Barnett said there were a total of six people in a Ford Winstar minivan at the time of the crash, that also involved a Honda Civic and a Ford F-150 pick-up truck.

Kyle Police said they believe the driver of the Civic, a male, was going the wrong way on I-35. That individual is in critical condition at an Austin hospital.

The driver of the pick-up was treated and released at the scene. All others involved in the crash were in the minivan, including two young children with non life-threatening injuries who are being treated at an area hospital.

All traffic was previously diverted onto the access road at exit 213 just south of Center Street.

Kyle Police reopened the remaining lanes of the highway around 6 a.m.
