A 57-year-old man is dead after he was hit while trying to change a tire on the side of the road.

The incident happened on South WW White Road near East Houston Street. Authorities taped off the entire width of WW White for about two blocks.

A police sergeant at the scene said the victim was involved in two accidents. The second one was fatal.

Emergency crews were called out to the 300 block of South WW White Road just after 8 p.m. on Thursday.

A white truck and gray Dodge Charger were in the center lane after they were involved in a small accident.

The truck was slightly sticking out into the southbound lanes. The 57-year-old victim had called a female friend to help him change a damaged front tire as they waited for police for the accident.

A short time after, a driver in an Acura SUV hit the back of the truck and the man and woman were hit.

The man died at the scene shortly after emergency medical services personnel tried to save him.

The sergeant said people should take precautions when involved in any type of accidents.

“If you can move that vehicle at all, we suggest you get that vehicle out of the roadway,” Sgt. Patrick Kelly said. “The further off the roadway the better. It's too easy to get caught in a secondary accident like this if you're still in the roadway. If you're out of the roadway in a parking lot, on a side street, anything that gets you out of the main flow of traffic is going to be much more safe.”

The friend the victim was taken to University Hospital with minor injuries. Kelly said the investigation is ongoing and the SUV driver was taken downtown for further questioning. He could face some alcohol-related charges.
