Out-of-control pickup narrowly misses homes

Driver arrested on suspicion of DWI

SAN ANTONIO – A man was arrested early Thursday on suspicion of DWI after San Antonio police said he lost control of his pickup and plowed through the backyards of two South Side homes.

Officers said the pickup crashed through a wooden fence and went across a grassy yard before plowing through a chainlink fence and into a second yard around 2:30 a.m. along South Zarzamora Street near Gillette Boulevard.

The truck also shoved a metal garbage dumpster about 50 yards from a nearby parking lot into the backyard, police said. It appears the dumpster may have slowed down the vehicle. Although a neighbor said the vehicle did hit one of the homes, no damage was immediately visible from the street.

It appears the pickup also took down a billboard and brought down some utility lines. San Antonio Water System and CPS Energy crews later arrived to assess the damage but did not make any repairs right away.

There were conflicting reports at the scene regarding injuries.

The driver was taken into custody and charged with DWI, police said.
