Man killed in I-35 collision with wrong-way driver identified

Armando Ortiz, 28, was killed early Sunday morning

SAN ANTONIO – The Bexar County Medical Examiner's office has released the name of the person killed in a wrong-way collision early Sunday morning.

Armando Ortiz, 28, was killed when a pickup truck going the wrong-way crashed head-on with Ortiz's car around 4:30 a.m. on Interstate 35 near Walzem Road. San Antonio police said Ortiz was pronounced dead at the scene.

The wrong way driver was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition. There is no word on what charges he may be facing.

The southbound lanes of Interstate 35 from Weidner to Walzem road were closed for part of Sunday morning. All lanes reopened just after 8 a.m.

All lanes of Interstate 35 near Walzem Road have reopened after a deadly wrong-way crash shut them down early Sunday morning. 

According to San Antonio police, the driver of a white pickup truck was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Interstate 35 when he crashed head-on with an oncoming car near Walzem Road. 

The driver of the car he hit was pronounced dead at the scene, said police. The driver of the white pickup was taken to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition. Investigators have not released information on current or potential charges. 

The crash happened around 4:30 a.m., shutting down the southbound lanes from Weidner to Walzem roads for most of the morning. 

All lanes reopened just after 8 a.m.
