Drunken driver goes airborne, crashes into New Braunfels Town Plaza

Fountain, barriers damaged

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – One well-known feature in New Braunfels was damaged Monday night.

A drunken driver apparently missed the turn as he headed into downtown New Braunfels and crashed through the town plaza that is surrounded by a traffic circle.

The driver's car went airborne as he crashed into the plaza, narrowly missing a fountain, and came to rest against a concrete median across from the Comal County Courthouse.

“Fortunate for him that he wasn’t more injured and fortunate for anybody else that might have been there,” said New Braunfels Police Department spokesman David Ferguson. “There’s often pedestrians around the Main Plaza.”

The driver was identified by New Braunfels police as George Towner of Austin.

Towner tried to run away, but two off-duty officers saw the crash and caught him before he got too far.

He was booked on charges of driving while intoxicated. Records show Towner has three previous DWI convictions which makes his latest charge a felony.
