Woman dies in wrong-way crash, driver facing charges, police say

Petronila Barajas, 57, died Friday

SAN ANTONIO – A woman injured in a crash with a wrong-way driver overnight has died, San Antonio police said Friday.

Petronila Barajas, 57, died Friday following an accident on Highway 90 West, just east of Military Drive on the city's West Side.

Police said a black Chevy pickup was traveling the wrong way in the eastbound lanes.

An officer attempted to get the attention of the driver of the pickup but the driver of the truck would not stop and was swerving in the westbound lanes. That's when, police said, the pickup struck the Chevy Impala head on.

Barajas was critically injured and was transported to University Hospital where she later died.

The wrong-way driver suffered a leg/ankle injury and was also transported to University Hospital.

The investigation of the crash and possible charges are pending.
