$30 million 'tunnel' coming to Wurzbach Parkway, NW Military intersection

AAMPO approved funding Monday

SAN ANTONIO – A busy Northwest Side intersection is about to get a major improvement, thanks to millions of dollars from the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization.

The AAMPO approved $33 million in improvements to Wurzbach Parkway.

The money will build a tunnel at the intersection of Wurzbach Parkway and NW Military Highway.

With the recent completion of the parkway east of NW Military Highway, traffic along Wurzbach Road to Interstate 10 has increased.

“This money will help relieve congestion,” District 8 Councilman Ron Nirenberg said. “A regional priority since the Wurzbach corridor is a main route into the South Texas Medical Center.”

The tunnel is similar to the one built at the intersection of Medical Drive and Fredericksburg Road in the South Texas Medical Center.

The other $3 million approved by the AAMPO will be used to continue a study of a flyover at Wurzbach Road and I-10.

The city of San Antonio also approved $2 million in additional improvements along Wurzbach Road to the 2017 bond that goes before voters in May.

A start date for the project was not released.
