SAN ANTONIO -- The calendar may say it's still spring, but summer seems to be in full swing at San Antonio International Airport.
Long lines of passengers, including whole families, waited Friday morning to board flights -— a sign that the summer travel season has begun.
By 6 a. m., crowds waiting to go through security at Terminal One stretched halfway the length of the building. While the lines were long, people took it in stride, especially for some who got caught in commuter traffic.
"We're running a little late," said Velma Mayfield, who decided to cash in on a Mothers Day gift and head to Las Vegas for the weekend.
Mayfield said she was caught off guard by all the families who were traveling, including Edith Trevino and her group of six, who were bound for Puebla, Mexico to visit family.
"School's out, so we're ready to go," Trevino said. "We've been planning since January."
Fortunately, the family's plans included arriving at the airport more than three hours before their international flight and bringing along items to occupy their time.
"They've got their iPods and things, books," Trevino said of the electronic gadgets that help her children pass the time.
Regular visitors to the airport say Fridays between 5 a. m. and 10 a.m. tend to be busiest for summer travel.
While the crowds were plentiful at the airport Friday, most travelers said they did not notice any significant delays.
