Tornado Blamed For Storm Damage

Tornado Had 80 MPH Winds

The remnants of Dolly roared through San Antonio on Thursday morning, peeling roofs from homes and businesses, uprooting trees, and downing power lines and fences on the city's south side.

No injuries were reported.

The heaviest hit area was centered in a two-block area in the 900 block of Steves Avenue, police said.

Officials said the storm caused $700,000 damage to 60 homes and 10 commercial properties.

Residents said the high winds had to be a tornado because they heard roars and a circular motion in the air when the storm hit around 9 a.m.

A man said he thought "the sky was falling" when the storm hit.

The National Weather Service officials confirmed the damage was caused by an EF-0 tornado on the enhanced Fujita Scale. The twister packed 80 mph winds, was 30 yards wide and a quarter of a mile long. Straight-line winds were also blamed for the damage.

Nick Fraga said he was asleep when he was awakened by howling winds and the ground shaking.

Seconds later, Fraga was sent flying out of his bed by a tree that was uprooted by the tornado.

"By the time I get up, I'm already flying out," Fraga said.

The tree lifted the back of the home off the ground, trapping Fraga. He finally was able to free himself by popping open a window.

Bruce Schmidt of Brady Marine said he and a couple of employees were in the building when high winds tore off the roof in the main office.

"We heard loud banging," he said. "(The) wind was blowing crazy. Roof ripped off. It was just wild. You know heart racing real fast, and it was kind of exciting."

A Whataburger restaurant in the area also had part of its roof peeled off.

CPS Energy crews restored power to most of the 700 homes and businesses that were left without power.

The storms also dumped heavy rain. The following roads were closed due to high water:

  • Jungman Road
  • Potranco Road
  • Blanco @ Cibolo Creek
  • Bulverde @ Cibolo Creek
  • Schaeffer @ Cibolo Creek
  • In the meantime, residents in the Rio Grande Valley were picking up the pieces one day after Dolly roared through the region (Read Story.)
