SAN ANTONIO -- Frustrations were building Wednesday among Hurricane Ike evacuees who want some clean clothes on their backs.
Many of the evacuees said they have been wearing the same clothes since they arrived at shelters in San Antonio over the weekend.
"I've been washing these clothes out and putting them on every day," said Kevin Green, an evacuee from Houston.
A group of Seventh Day Adventists planned to donate a truckful of clothing at Port San Antonio on Wednesday morning but the vehicle drove away after church officials found out there wasn't a distribution plan in place.
"The city, rightfully so, told us they were concerned that if we were to give out clothing to some, the rest of the ones who didn't get would be in an uproar," said Danny Hermosillo, a Salvation Army spokesman.
Hermosillo said some evacuees boarded buses in hopes of finding clothing on their own.
But Green said he didn't have any luck.
"Some people told us they are maxed out, some told us to come back tomorrow," he said.
Late Wednesday morning, volunteers began distributing clothing vouchers to evacuees. Hermosillo said he believes there will be enough clothing to go around.
"Between what we have in our thrift stores and the clothing we've collected, we believe there will be enough," he said.
More than 4,000 evacuees remained at Port San Antonio on Wednesday.
